It can either be cured with antibiotics or just simple cough medicine as the illness is self limiting.
Pneumonia is a likely deadly issue. It usually presents with a short history of shortness of breath, productive cough and fever. The vet might be able to hear coarse breath sounds. Treatment is with antibiotics and should be started instantly.
