Leatherman Kick Tool - An Interesting Product That's Compact But Still Equipped With Useful Functions
The Leatherman Kick is the smallest of a series of 3 tools designed by Leatherman, the alternative's being the Fuse together with the Blast.
Leatherman Kick - Lighter In Weight
The Leatherman Kick features plastic set into the handle which means it is much more comfortable to hold than the old PST and PST II models. The Leatherman Kick is a very welcome addition, as people who have owned or used a PST will confirm! The pliers head has been updated to increase strength without having an impact on the multi tool's size or bulk, and appears to have worked nicely- they are a little odd to look at for people who are used to other tools, nonetheless this is a tool, not a fashion show, and they perform.
The Leatherman Kick also incorporates a phillips screwdriver, can/bottle opener, two flathead screwdrivers, as well as a clip- point blade. The tool selection may be minimal on this one, but remember, it is the smallest of the 3 models. The plus side is that the tools (specifically the screwdrivers) seem to be slightly better than other multi's - the shafts are slightly longer, allowing a little more versatility than usual, and an improved chance at hard to access screws. It's a minor thing, but it really does make a difference - to a lot when it's the only tool you have available and the screw is buried inside of something.
Note the Extended Screwdriver
For sure, the Kick is a nice tool, but it does have it's negatives. Because of it's light weight, the Kick feels inadequate. As it is backed by Leatherman's 25 year guarantee, it is very well made, but in comparison to many different tools both larger and smaller, it doesn't appear to be quite as robust. It also might seem a little small to those with larger hands.
On an important note, despite the low number of tools on this tool, it still suffers from Leatherman's infamous problem, tool clumping. How is it that a handle with just three tools built in, all come out whilst you try to get only one? With each new generation of tools, this negative point should be a distant memory.
The Leatherman Kick is a decent tool at a good price, but not an option for a heavy user or a bigger person. My suggestion is that it's better suited as a small tool for a lady's purse or as a young persons first tool. It could be regarded as a "cute" tool for those folks that rarely need tools although like to be prepared.
Leatherman Fuse Tool - More Capable When Compared With The Less Costly Leatherman Kick But Leaner And Even Lighter Than The Leatherman Blast
The Leatherman Fuse is the middle child in a family of three tools Leatherman brought out in 2004. It is more capable than the less expensive Kick, but thinner and lighter than the Blast.
